If golf or tennis aren't your game, or you would just like to do something
different,
maybe a walk, jog or bicycle ride would suit your fancy. You can basically
pick the
distance of your choice by selecting from a number of road loops within
L.A.W.,
some of which are described and mapped below.
• Short Loops
There are several short loops that are possible on L.A.W. roads,
including the
four that are illustrated here. Working from top to bottom, the loop
formed by
Marion Trail, Slim Drive and a short segment of L.A.W. Drive
adds up to 0.9 mile.
The loop formed primarily by Maidu and L.A.W. Drive
amounts to 1.3 miles.
For a similar but shorter route, try Manzanita and Raccoon ;
this works out to 0.7 mile.
Finally, there's a 1.1 mile loop with some climbing
involved in the Top of the
West - Osprey route.
• Long Iron - Osprey - L.A.W. Drive Loop
At the southeastern end of the development you can add
some distance as well
as elevation change with a 1.7 mile loop using L.A.W.
Drive, Osprey and Long Iron.
• Longer Loops
Slim Drive and L.A.W. Drive form a
moderate length ( 2.5 mile ) loop when
connected by Long Iron:
Extending that loop by adding Maidu
Drive makes the length 3.6 miles:
Or, if you want some additional
elevation change, you can do the "outer loop"
by connecting Osprey with L.A.W. Drive;
this comes to 3.5 miles:
Finally, if you simply want to pack on
the miles, there's an "outer loop plus" with
added excursions onto Maidu, Manzanita,
Raccoon and Top of the West , which
brings the total distance up to 4.9 miles:
• Climber's Special
If distance is less important than
elevation change, you might want to try
the "to-the-top" route that begins at the
intersection of Long Iron and L.A.W. Drive,
proceeds uphill on Long Iron to Slim ,
takes a right on Slim for a short distance,
and then climbs the walking path up the incline
to Top of the West. From there,
continue on to the end of Eagle Crest,
for a total one-way distance of about
1.0 mile and an elevation change of about
300 feet (much of which occurs on
the walking path). Due to the steepness of the
walking path, it is not recommended
when the surface is slippery.
• Access to Forest Trails
There are numerous dirt roads,
trails and tracks immediately south of
the
Lake Almanor West development. You will
find the more commonly used trails
described in our
Forest Trails page. But just to set
the stage, you can access
the forest directly from the development
in three different locations.
Working from right to left on the map,
the easternmost access route is from
our
boat ramp area; simply take the dirt
road the proceeds south from the boat
ramp
road near the portable toilet.
Another access route is via the
"emergency exit" road that intersects
Osprey
between Manzanita and Raccoon; it heads
in a southwest direction, past a
connection with the paved Forest Service
trail and through the archery range
area until it connects with Hwy 89.
The final access route is the dirt road
that extends south from Osprey at the
western intersection with Top of the
West. This short road ends in a small
parking area just inside our
community-owned 17 acre greenbelt area.
